About the Community

Almost as soon as I posted the first video of me running a failure challenge with my students, the messages started… comments, DMs, and emails from other educators asking how they could do something similar with their own groups.

I tried to answer everyone, but one-on-one calls just don't scale. So I wrote a guide for running one of my failure challenges and shared it online for anyone who wanted it.

Within a week, more than 10,000 people had downloaded it. So I wrote another. The same thing happened.

That's when I began to realize just how many educators are out there hungry for new ways to engage their students and teach lessons that actually matter.

This community is my attempt to bring those people together, and I've been amazed at who's shown up. Not just college professors like me, but grade school teachers, corporate trainers, HR leaders, and even parents looking for creative ways to connect with their kids.

What started as a single guide is growing into a group of educators passionate about teaching in ways that finally stop making failure the villain of education.

Every month I also record an audio version where I talk through the challenge including the thinking behind it, how I actually run it, and what I've learned from watching it play out with my own students. Listen in the car, on a walk, or while you're doing the dishes, and you'll come away ready to lead it yourself.

Live Office Hours

Once a month we get together live online. Bring your questions about teaching, failing, leadership, or whatever's on your mind, and we'll think through it together. Can't make it? No problem: every session is recorded, and I share the recording along with notes and lessons afterward, so you never miss what came up.

  • I tried a Failure Challenge with my sophomore seminar expecting an awkward 20 minutes. Instead I got the best discussion we've had all semester. I joined the community that day and have been giving challenges every month.

  • I used my first Failure Challenge guide with my 7th graders the same week I downloaded it. The setup and debrief prompts were easy to follow. Best of all was watching my kids talk about failing. It was a lesson I knew they'd use for the rest of their lives.

FAQ

  • You’ll receive an email after you join with login instructions for the online archive. It contains a collection of failure challenges, including the most recent one. A new challenge will be added every month.

    The archive also contains discussions and notes from previous live office hours as well as announcements and links to access the next session. (Access instructions and links are also emailed.)

  • Use the challenges however and wherever you want. The challenges are created for you, and I hope, by sharing them, more people will have access to these valuable learning tools. The only thing I ask is that you give credit to Learning to Fail so people who experience the challenges can know where to find more resources and support.

  • Yes… within reason. Usually the conversations center around failure challenges and teaching, but sometimes we go on tangents. It’s a free-flowing conversation that’s meant to help community members by answering the questions they need answers.

  • Definitely not! While the community obviously skews toward those groups, it also has everything from HR leaders to parents. Simply put, “educators” aren’t just in schools. If you’re someone helping others rebuild their relationship with failure, this community is for you.

  • Currently, the only way to access failure challenge facilitation guides is by joining the community. However, I’m working on ways for people to purchase packages of challenges. To stay informed about when that’s available, be sure to join my newsletter.
